What is BV43 ?

1. What is BV43?

Identity: BV43 is a turbocharger manufactured by BorgWarner. BorgWarner is a top-tier turbocharger manufacturer,

on par with Garrett and Mitsubishi.

Main Applications: This turbocharger is almost exclusively used in certain high-performance

engine versions from the Volkswagen Group.

2. Model Name Meaning and Design Features

The naming of this model encapsulates its core characteristics:

B: Stands for BorgWarner.

V: The "V" here has different interpretations, but it is usually related to its wastegate actuator design.

One common interpretation is that it stands for "Vacuum," indicating that it uses a vacuum-controlled wastegate.

Another interpretation is that it represents a specific housing design.

43: This number refers to the turbine housing diameter (in millimeters), specifically, the flange diameter

on the turbine exhaust inlet side is approximately 43mm. This directly reflects the turbine's flow capacity.

Core Design: The BV43 is a fixed-section turbocharger. Unlike the GTB1749VK we discussed earlier, it lacks variable geometry blades.

Its performance relies more on the engine's displacement and tuning.

3. Main Applications and Performance Levels

The BV43 is a performance-oriented factory turbocharger primarily used in the high-power

versions of Volkswagen Group's 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TFSI gasoline engines.

Notable models equipped with this turbocharger include:

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 30 / Golf R20: These special edition GTIs use the BV43 turbocharger,

boosting power to approximately 230 horsepower.

Volkswagen Scirocco R

Audi TTS (8J)

Audi S3 (8P)

SEAT Leon Cupra R

In these models, the BV43 turbocharger helps the engine output approximately 265 to 270 horsepower in its stock configuration,

a significant improvement over the 200-210 horsepower of a standard 2.0 TSI (such as the K03 turbocharger).

4. Position in the Aftermarket

Original High-Performance Option: For owners of the standard 2.0 TSI engine equipped with a smaller turbocharger (such as the K03),

upgrading to the original BV43 turbocharger is a very popular and relatively mature option, safely boosting horsepower to around 270 hp.

Potential and Limitations: The BV43 is considered an option for "high-end original upgrades" or "entry-level performance

modifications" for the 2.0 TSI engine. Its potential is more than sufficient for daily street driving, but for hardcore modifiers aiming for over 400 hp,

it remains a bottleneck, requiring a larger turbocharger (such as the GTX2867R).

Summary: When you see BV43, you should understand it as:

It is BorgWarner's original high-performance turbocharger for the 2.0 TSI/TFSI engines in Volkswagen Group

high-performance models (such as the Golf GTI Edition 30, Audi TTS, etc.). It is a fixed-section turbocharger

that helps the engine output approximately 265-270 horsepower, and is also a very popular upgrade option for owners of the standard 2.0 TSI.
