Turbocharger Explained

We often see numbers like TF035 and BV35 on the packaging of turbochargers. What do these numbers represent? Let's analyze them together.

I'll use TF035 as an example.

1. What is TF035?

Identity: The TF035 is a turbocharger manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Mitsubishi turbocharger models typically begin with TD, TH, or TF.

Model Meaning:

T: Turbocharger

F: Represents its series or design generation (distinguishing it from earlier TD series, etc.).

035: Usually refers to the size or specifications of the compressor end (intake side). This number is related to the turbine's airflow and boosting capacity.

Main Features: The TF035 is a relatively small turbocharger.  Its characteristics include quick response

 at low RPM and minimal turbo lag, but its maximum horsepower at high RPM is relatively limited.

2. Which car models commonly use the TF035 turbocharger?

This turbocharger is widely used in many Japanese small-displacement performance cars, most notably

 the early models of the "street fighter" Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I - III: The original turbocharger in these early Evo models was the TF035. 

Paired with its famous 4G63T engine, it provided extremely rapid low-to-mid-range torque.

Some other models: Besides Mitsubishi's own models, it may also appear as an aftermarket part or in certain models of other brands.

3. What is its relationship with the engine?

You can understand the engine and the turbocharger as two key components in a power system:

Engine (e.g., 4G63T): This is the "body" and "heart" of the power system, responsible for burning fuel to generate energy.

Turbocharger (e.g., TF035): This is the "amplifier" or "booster" of the power. It uses the exhaust gases from the engine to drive a turbine,

 forcing more air into the engine cylinders, allowing the engine to burn fuel more completely and produce more horsepower.

An analogy:

The engine is like an athlete's lungs, while the turbocharger is like a high-tech oxygen mask that helps him 

inhale more oxygen during strenuous exercise, allowing him to perform better.
